All I want for Christmas is equality.
Why is equality scary?
It seems to be out of fashion nowadays to speak in favor of equality in too many places. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and everyone’s more divided by politics. Why are people so unlikely to share their wealth with each other? The answer is something that might surprise you…
Equality scares people.
When everyone is equal, we can no longer put ourselves above others. That’s a scary thought for some people, because it means that we can’t take pride in our accomplishments or hope to advance through life by stepping on others. We would have to love and respect each other as equals, and that’s something that seems impossible to some.
It is the privileged people who are willing to fight for equality because they don’t want their best efforts to be devalued or go underappreciated. It’s easier to see our own achievements as well as others’ when there is a barrier between us, so that we know how high we have to reach in order to be seen, heard, and respected. It’s easier to ignore what we don’t want to see when it doesn’t directly affect us.
The purpose of equality is not for everyone to be exactly the same or live identical lives. The idea is that our struggles are worth the same as anyone else’s; that our achievements carry equal weight with those of others; and that we all have the same right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
There is no such thing as a level playing field. Life will always be unfair because people are different and society makes judgments based on how we look and where we came from. But as long as those standards aren’t used to discriminate, we should be able to work and achieve as others do.
Equality is not about giving handouts or making things easy for some people just because they’re viewed as less capable than others. It’s about giving all children the same chance to succeed by removing obstacles that would otherwise hold them back, such as lack of access to quality education, health care, and housing. Equality is about leveling the playing field so that all of us can live our lives without shame because we know we are equal to everyone else in value and potential.
So why do some people still think that equality is scary? It’s likely because they’re afraid too much could be taken away from them if we all become equal. But if we want to create a society that is based on love, respect, and hope, then we must be willing to embrace equality for all. Pride in our accomplishments is good, but it should not come at the expense of someone else’s success. Let’s hope for a future where love and equality are the prevailing forces in society, and everyone has the opportunity to achieve their dreams.
